There are 7 main energy centers along the spine, the chakras, which are connected to and influence a person’s physical, emotional, and spiritual state.
1st Chakra – base of the spine Associated with survival, courage, inner security, grounding, and vitality. Color: red
2nd Chakra – genital area Associated with sexual expression, creativity, and family. Color: orange
3rd Chakra – solar plexus Associated with the ego, intellect, will, and the emotional center. Color: yellow
4th Chakra – heart Associated with matters of the heart, love, compassion, and faith. Color: green
5th Chakra – throat Associated with communication, truth, higher knowledge, and voice. Color: blue
6th Chakra – “third eye” (between the eyebrows) Associated with intuition and inner vision. Color: indigo
7th Chakra – crown of the head (crown) Associated with higher/universal consciousness, the heavens, and unity. Color: violet and white
During the practice of mudras, we harmonize the influence of the “solar system” on the body. Each finger is symbolically linked to a planet and qualities:
- Thumb – Mars Willpower, logic, ego
- Index finger – Jupiter Knowledge, justice, truth, honor, self-confidence
- Middle finger – Saturn Patience, emotional control, ambition
- Ring finger – Sun Vitality, health, matters of the heart
- Little finger – Mercury Written and spoken communication, beauty, creativity
